LO4: Evaluation

Our brief for unit 5 was to create a short film for our unit 15, in this we chose to create a short film. Our short film was named Arden Secret and follow the narrative of a group of friends with a relationship in the group- which the protagonist Arden was cheating on her boyfriend with his best friend, this led other things to happen to conclude to the ending of the mystery drama based film.  Our target audience for Arden's secret was of a C2DE classification and a female audience of 60% and 40% male, which was 15-24  years old. Because of the young age our film is based at we made the film have a classification of a 15, this is because it has irrational behaviour and drugs which are shown in the short film- we got these of BBFC as it states which ratings are suitable for types of films. The genre of our short film is mystery drama as it has similar conventions of this genre of film, therefore it was easier to understand a basic narrative and storyline to use.

For our narrative we chose to base it around the the whole group as all main characters tied in to the story, as Arden and Evan being the couple and having problems throughout the story and keeping a secret from him. We thought it would be good to create a short film which was based on the mystery genre rather than having horror film as they don't tend to be scary as with a mystery drama we can show a wider meaning.

Based off the feedback we received our audience understood the narrative but they didn't give an explanation of what it was fully about- as people suggested an improvement to make the narrative more clear as they don't understand what the ending is meant to be about.
Our audience also understood from the film that it was based on a mystery and drama genre, this was understood as we used the conventions of a mystery film. We also show the films target audience through the use of the characters and props used, as the characters are all in their teen years and dressed appreciate for how they would at that age, the use of props like the alcohol and the location of a party also helps settle the target audience range as our audience know it will be targeted at the teens and young adults.
For our short film we used a lot of medium shots this was to not just get the expression on the characters face but have some of their outfit and location in the shot so the audience knew what was happening. Although we would have liked to use harder shots for example arc shots which are good to use in a tense moment so would have been perfect for our film being a mystery/ drama, if we was to do this film again we would ensure to use shots like that for example and dolly zooms.
Through the editing stage we used Adobe Premier this is because it is used in the professional industry and when exported can we viewed by anyone. We used tools In that software for example the fade in and out effect which was used commonly to make it run soothly to the next scene and added a location shot with atmospherically music in to set a new scene and break them up. This makes it more visually pleasing for the audience.

In conclusion, we faced some weaknesses in making Arden Secret for example one being that we did not plan our time as well as we could have leading us to have a lot of tasks to do at once and underestimating how long the video takes to edit to get it to match the audio. If we was to do this task again I would make sure to create more production plans and meeting minutes and following them throughout making the film.

LO4: Proposal for certficiation classification

The certificate for our short film is going to be certificated a 15 and this is because there is some drug use within the film so therefore the BBFC would class this as fit into the category of a 15 film.

Below is what is what the BBFC class would fit into a certificated a 15 :

There is also harmful behaviour included in our film that includes a death and would not be suitable for an audience below the age of 15. Below is the guideline to what behaviour would be classed as a 15 :

LO4: Evidence of a focus group screening and feedback

This is evidence of our focus group screening, which shows a group of people watching our short film, then after all filling our a survey on survery monkey.

LO3: Logging rushes and creating edit decision list

These are our usable shots from the short film. We looked through all of the shots and analysed to see which were usable and not due to some of them being shakey and out of focus

LO2: Legal and Ethical

We are going to make sure we do not discriminate against anyone in our short film. We will be doing this by using male and female actors and different races of people to make sure we target all of audience because our target audience is a range of different people so therefore we need to have actors that connote this and appeal to our audience. There will be no conversation that may come across as harmful to a certain race or person and there will be no discrimination against anyone in our film.  Some of the ethical issues are :
Ethical issues
Discrimination
Offensive
Prejudice
how you will represent people and places
harmful
Stereotypes

We will also need to make sure we take into consideration the Legal issue as we do not want our short film to be removed from Youtube because of some of the legal issue. Some of the Legal issues are :

copyright patents act (1988)
intellectual property
Libel
Slander
Data protection act
Freedom of information.

The short film would be placed live on Youtube after 9 ( the watershed) because it is a certificate of 15 so therefore it would not be suitable for any young people that may still be awake and are under the age of 15. We will be using royalty free sounds so that we do not get accused of Copy Right and we need to make sure we are following the rule of Intellectual Property act.

It would be a legal issue for our short film so we would have to address this by getting permission off the actors. Also by getting them to sign and release and consent form to feature them in the film and get their permission for it. For example we would not be able to use a clips of the actors that we do not have permission for if we do this it could lead to the short film being removed form Youtube.

Also we need permission from locations to use them in the video.  If we end up getting the bands contact details we will have to keep that information safe and protect it because its their personal information.

The BBFC ( British Board of Film Classification ) are an organisation that classify film and videos. This is needed as people of a young age could be revealed to inapropriate content and this could then also lead to complaints being made towards the film / video however BBFC stop this from happening as if anyway was to go to the cinema to see a film they would need ID to be able to purchase a ticket to see the film. Because it is only 15 we would not include anything that would fit into a higher category.

OFCOM ( Office of Communication ) also regulate video alongside other things such as TV and Radio. For the short film we would need to follow the rules of OFCOM so that the video is not taken down or reported.  We would need to apply this to the short film , it is important that the video is appropriate for the audience and we need to make sure that the footage is not inappropriate and offensive.

LO2: Following production processes

This is a photograph of Jess filming at one our locations, which was at her house.

This is an image of me filming at one our locations.

This is an image of Monique filming at one of our locations

LO2: Evidence of safe working practices

We started filming the scene, then realised we was filming in front of a fire door which says keep clear. So we moved locations

This was an image of when we moved locations due to being in front of the fire door.
After moving we followed our risk assessment and moved any wires out the way which could put a risk on the actors or ourselves.

LO2: Evidence of setting up equipment

This photograph shows me setting up the tripod and camera at one our locations which was at Dev Green.

This was a photograph of Monique setting up the tripod and microphone at our of locations, which was at Jess's house.

This was Jess altering the tripod stands to make them longer,  at one our locations at her house.

LO2: Following shooting script/storyboard

Above are photographs of Monique following the script, where she is ordering the actors of what position to get in etc. This was taken at one of our locations of filming which was Jess's house.

LO1: Moodboard

LO1: Set designs and Location Scouting

We are going to be using different locations whilst filming Arden's secret so that we are able to make the film as realistic as possible. We are also going to be using locations to portray the narrative and it will also help the audience to use certain locations to link it with certain characters. The locations used will be locations that would be stereotypically associated with teenagers , such as bedrooms with posters , parks and being outside. WE will be filming during the day so that the locations are well lit in comparison to filming at night and the film being short on screen. When filming on public spaces such as parks we will need to make sure that there is no un wanted background noise because this could distract the audience from the narrative of the film.

Location Recce:

For the location in the park we will be standing in front of the swings and filming the front shot. The ground is flat on the park so it is flat enough to use a tripod to film. We will place the tripod in front of the bench we all are sitting on in the shot and Evie will set it to film and will pan the camera using the tripod. The bedroom scene we are going to place it in the centre of the room to show all around the room. We are going to be doing a lot of scenes sat on the bed so we will place the tripod in level with the bed and move the camera as far away as we can to show the wide angle of the bed and to fit the actors in the scene. We will rotate the camera around the room to show different scenes. The floor in the bedroom is flat so the camera won't be at an angle. We are doing a dancing scene so we will place the camera on the tripod just in from of the bathroom door so it can fit everyone in the shot. We will put it on a timer so everyone in the production for the film can be included in the party scene. It needs to be far away so the shot can fit us all in. The tripod will be at the top level for all the shots so it is level with the scenes. We will check the camera before filming the scene to see if the position of the camera is accurately framed and to check the lighting and we will reposition the camera to see where the best shot is for lighting because we are outside some shots are better for lighting than others. We are filming outside of a pub and using it as the gig venue in the film so we will put the camera in a place where you can see the pub so the scene makes sense so the audience know they have left the place. and we will position it as though they are walking upto the camera and they have just left the venue. Need to put the camera in a place where it frames the shot and includes everything in it. The shot will change and the camera will be in the opposite direction so some of the actors are seen to be walking another direction.

LO1: Risk Assessment

DEVONSHIRE GREEN - RISK

The Weather :  - This could be be a down fall because this is filmed outside so therefore if it rains we will need a backup plan otherwise a whole scene will need to be redone and this would delay the whole project.

- Un even ground: -  this could be a negative thing or an issue because we need to use a tripod to be able to focus the camera and stop it from the picture from being fuzzy. To stop this we will plan out exactly where about we are going to film.

The public : - Because we will be filming in a public space there will be a lot of background noise so therefore we will have to make sure the time that we plan the scene around a time that will not be too busy and there will not be a lot of distractions.

BEDROOM

Plugs and electric : - Make sure no liquids is around the plugs. Don't trip over the wires.

Open windows for cigarette smoke
Make sure you don't set anything/anyone on fire with the cigarette.

LEADMILL / A GIG VENUE

People inside the gig - Could be a risk because there will be a lot of people in the venue so we will need to make sure that the camera does not get damaged when filming in a busy atmosphere.

Wires and objects - There will be barriers and wires around the venue so therefore we will need to be careful when walking around then venue.

The floor - The floor in the venue will be slippy because of people spilling drinks so therefore we need to make sure we are careful whilst walking around the venue.

People - The sound in the venue will be very loud so therefore we will need to plan our dialogue so that if there is any the audience need to be able to tell what the characters are saying.

Permission - We will need to gain permission from Leadmill to be able to film our scene in here.

OUTSIDE THE GIG VENUE

Whilst filming outside the gig venue we need to make sure that there is not a lot of background noise otherwise the audience will not be able to tell what the characters are saying.

THE HOLT

We are going to ask for permission to film in this venue as it looks like a cool venue and one that would suit our

LO2: How meaning was created within the materials created

Mise En Scene was used throughout producing our short film Ardens Secret- this was used to create meaning and setting the mood.

An example of us using mine en scene to set the mood are using different camera angles to capture the emotions on our characters face. This shows our characters with a blank expression on their face, however showing that something isn't right. The use of having a medium shot was used as it shows both facial expressions of the characters and their body actions.

Showing medium shots connote wider meanings as it not only gets the expression of their face but their body and the location of where they are. This shot is situated in the protagonists house as it is connoting that she is the main character.

Another example of how we created a meaning with mise en scene was one of our scenes which included a party. It shows that the. actors are at a. party due to the location, and props with the alcohol and music playing in the background. One of the characters emotions are portrayed in a medium close up and connotes that the character is in an unsteady move with her facial expression, showing sthat she is doing something that she doesn't want to. this could denote to the reader that something bad is going to happen through the end of the story

The use of the dim lighting also sets the location within mile en scene as it allows the audience to know what time of day it is and could be portraying danger through the use of dim lit lighting.

A final example of how meaning was created through mine en scene is connoting who the main portogist is through the use of her costume, props and the mood she sets when she's in the shot. As you can tell from the costumes that the main protaonigst is high maintenance and mot likely to be the most popular one in the group with the use of er fluffy jacket and the attitude she appears to have when talking.

Using a medium close up was important in this scene as it shows her full emotion and looks non chalet through her expression.
